What Is the Difference Between the 1-Day and 3-Day First Aid Courses?

1-Day Emergency First Aid at Work Course (EFAW)

The 1-day emergency first aid at work course focuses on the essential life-saving skills required to manage common workplace emergencies. It is suitable for lower-risk environments or as part of a wider first aid provision.

This course includes adult CPR, safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), management of unresponsive casualties, the recovery position, choking response, and basic wound care including cuts and bleeding. It provides a strong foundation for employees appointed as emergency first aiders.

3-Day First Aid at Work Course

The 3-day First Aid at Work course builds on all EFAW content and explores a broader range of conditions in greater depth. It is more suitable for higher-risk workplaces or where a wider first aid response capability is required.

In addition to EFAW topics, the extended course covers head injuries, diabetes, anaphylaxis, heart conditions and other serious illnesses, enabling learners to deal with a wider range of eventualities in the workplace.

Is Your Workplace Prepared?

An estimated 600,000 workers in Britain sustain an injury at work each year, highlighting the importance of effective first aid provision.

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employers are required to ensure appropriate first aid arrangements are in place. This includes carrying out a risk assessment, appointing a sufficient number of trained first aiders, and providing suitable first aid training for the workplace.

Beyond legal compliance, having trained emergency first aiders helps reduce injury severity, improves response times, and demonstrates a strong commitment to employee wellbeing and safety.

About the Course

The QA Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) is designed for individuals who wish to act as emergency first aiders in their workplace. On successful completion, learners will be equipped to give safe, prompt and effective first aid in a range of emergency situations.

As an Ofqual Regulated Qualification accredited by Qualsafe Awards, this workplace first aid course provides reassurance to employers that training meets nationally recognised standards, without the need for additional due diligence following recent HSE changes to first aid training oversight.

Emergency First Aid at Work Course Content

This emergency first aid at work training course covers all key elements required for effective workplace emergency response.

Learners gain a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an emergency first aider, including recognising the limits of their role, maintaining personal safety, understanding employer and employee responsibilities, and knowing when and how to escalate incidents to emergency services. Emphasis is placed on remaining calm, organised and confident during an emergency.

The course teaches learners how to assess an incident safely, identify hazards, protect themselves and others, prioritise actions, and assess casualties to determine the most appropriate response.

A critical part of the course focuses on managing an unresponsive casualty, including checking responsiveness, opening the airway, assessing breathing and taking appropriate action.

Learners receive hands-on training in CPR and AED use, practising techniques in line with the latest Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. Confidence is built in using AEDs, which are now standard in many workplaces and public settings.

The course also covers how and when to place a casualty into the recovery position, how to recognise and respond to choking, and how to support individuals experiencing seizures, including protecting the casualty and managing the surrounding environment.

Training continues with understanding and managing shock, recognising its signs and symptoms, and providing appropriate care through positioning, reassurance and monitoring.

Learners are trained in managing wounds and bleeding, including the use of direct pressure, dressings and bandages, with updated guidance for managing more serious bleeding. The course also covers minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, and the immediate management of minor burns and scalds, focusing on correct cooling techniques, protection of the affected area and recognising when to escalate treatment.

The roles and responsibilities of an emergency first aider

This emergency first aid at work training course provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on skills required to respond effectively to a wide range of workplace emergencies.

Learners gain a clear understanding of what it means to act as an emergency first aider in the workplace.

This includes recognising the limits of their role, understanding employer and employee responsibilities, maintaining personal safety, and knowing when and how to escalate incidents to emergency services.

The importance of remaining calm, organised and confident during an emergency is strongly emphasised.

CPR and AED use

Learners receive hands-on training in adult CPR and the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Techniques are taught in line with the latest Resuscitation Council UK guidelines, building confidence in using AEDs now commonly found in workplaces and public settings.

Recovery position

Learners are shown how and when to place a casualty into the recovery position, why it is used, and how to monitor the casualty safely while awaiting further medical assistance.

This topic covers recognising the signs of choking and responding appropriately. Learners practise back blows and abdominal thrusts for adults to ensure fast, effective intervention.

Seizures

Learners gain an understanding of how to support someone having a seizure, including protecting the casualty from injury, managing the environment, avoiding unsafe actions, and knowing when to seek medical assistance.

Shock

The course explains what shock is, how it can occur following injury or illness, and how to recognise its signs and symptoms. Learners are taught appropriate management through positioning, reassurance and monitoring.

Wounds and bleeding

Learners are trained to manage bleeding safely and effectively using direct pressure, dressings and bandages. Updated guidance for managing more serious bleeding is included to reflect current first aid best practice.

Minor injuries

This section covers common minor injuries encountered in workplace environments and teaches learners how to provide appropriate first aid while recognising when escalation is required.

Cuts, grazes and bruises

Learners are shown how to clean and dress cuts and grazes correctly, manage bruising, and reduce the risk of infection, supporting safe day-to-day first aid provision.

Minor burns and scalds

Learners are taught the immediate management of minor burns and scalds, including correct cooling techniques, protecting the affected area and understanding when further medical treatment is required.

Practical Assessment and Certification

The course concludes with a practical assessment and multiple-choice examination, allowing learners to demonstrate their understanding and competence.

Successful candidates are awarded the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF), an Ofqual Regulated Qualification recognised nationwide.

This certificate confirms that the learner has received appropriate emergency first aid training for the workplace and is competent to act as an emergency first aider.

First Aid Training Updates

First aid training has undergone some of the most significant updates in over 20 years following the latest Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. SAMS LTD ensures that all emergency first aid at work courses reflect these evidence-based changes.

Updates include revised infant choking and CPR techniques, refined chest compression methods for babies under one year, improved guidance for managing traumatic bleeding, and increased emphasis on AED awareness and use.

Updated paediatric first aid requirements under EYFS regulations from September 2025 are also incorporated into training materials.

There is now a strong recommendation for annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain competence between their three-year requalification cycles.

Refresher Training and Ongoing Competence

Although the emergency first aid at work certificate is valid for three years, regular refresher training is considered best practice. Short annual refresher sessions help first aiders retain confidence, stay aligned with updated guidance, and ensure skills remain effective in real emergency situations.

SAMS LTD can support organisations with refresher training options alongside full requalification courses.

Group Bookings and Workplace Delivery

Group prices are available on request, making this workplace first aid course a cost-effective solution for organisations training multiple staff. Courses can be delivered at SAMS LTD’s training venues or on-site at your premises, subject to suitability and availability.

This flexibility allows businesses to tailor first aid training courses for the workplace to their operational needs while maintaining compliance.
