How the climate crisis killed the beloved Costa Rican Golden Toad

How the climate crisis killed the golden toad

Costa Rica is known for being one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, accounting for nearly 4% of animal species and 9000 species of plants worldwide. As such, it’s no surprise that you’ll find some of the most vibrant, exotic animals prowling deep in the Costa Rican rainforest.

You’ll see white faces capuchin monkeys, jaguars, toucans, scarlet macaws and much more!  However, the further we proceed into the global climate crisis, the fewer animals we are seeing. The Costa Rican forests used to be home to hundreds of spectacular, bright golden toads that would gather around dazzling pools of rainwater.

According to an ecologist Alan Pounds, there were once around 1,500 golden toads observed in the area of the highland forest where the entire species resided. But by 1989, only a single male was left after the pools in which the roads congregated dried up. This has been concluded to be a result of early extinctions linked to the current climate crisis.

Access to a clean and healthy environment is declared as a universal right

Access to a clean and healthy environment is declared as a universal right – and so it should be!

The UN General Assembly has taken a step forward in history, which now means access to a clean and sustainable environment is a universal right.

Essentially this means the formally recognition of the value of a healthy environment, something that should help increase people’s efforts to implement this international commitment. We’re happy to see the world stepping towards a systematic change, and are delighted to be contributing to it.

Switching to renewable energy could save trillions

You can go wrong with saving money whilst saving the planet, it’s what we call a double whammy! When the figures add up to trillions of pounds, then you know it’s well worth the investment.

Oxford University has concluded that by switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy, we could save the world 12 trillion dollars by 2050!

With fuel prices getting higher and higher and renewable costs falling, it’s clear that the argument of renewable energy being too expensive is losing its accuracy #Soolastyear.

What if we don’t change?

If we do not change our habits now, life will be incredibly expensive in the long run. The IMF has made  the urgency of reducing greenhouse gases clear for this reason.

According to the IMF, we achieve a 25% cut in Greenhouse Gases by 2030, then this will cost LESS in comparison to not acting at all. A recent blog stated that “if the right measures are implemented immediately and phased in gradually over the next eight years, the costs will remain manageable and are dwarfed by the innumerable long-term costs of inaction”

Let’s work together, and not ignore we we need to do to reduce greenhouse gases now!
