What is black Friday?
Black Friday is renowned as the day when stores drastically slash prices, turning high streets into a sea of signs proclaiming discounts like 20% OFF, 50% OFF, and even 70% OFF. The scene resembles a frenzied mob as shoppers are drawn in by enticing deals. The lingering question remains: what led to the inception of this shopping extravaganza?
The term “Black Friday” originated after the gold market crash in 1869, which sent shockwaves through the global financial market due to the soaring price of gold. Initially used by American police authorities to mark the beginning of the holiday shopping season, attempts were made by city authorities and merchants to rebrand it as ‘Big Friday,’ but the name didn’t stick.
In a shift during the 70s and 80s, retailers crafted a new narrative. Drawing inspiration from financial terminology, stores being ‘in the red’ denoted poor sales, while being ‘in the black’ indicated success. Thus, the day after Thanksgiving became ‘Black Friday’ as shoppers flocked to secure discounted goods, putting retailers in the black. Since then, the day after Thanksgiving has evolved into the Black Friday spectacle we recognize and embrace today.
