About the Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health

The Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health is an entry-level Ofqual (RQF) certified course for mental health awareness in the workplace.

Mental health is an increasingly prominent issue in organisations around the world, with a recognition that poor mental health can negatively impact on our health, wellbeing and productivity. With around 15% of us experiencing mental health issues in the workplace, many businesses are looking to provide support through awareness training and other schemes.


Who is the Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health for?


This 4-hour course is an introduction to the issue of mental health in the workplace, with the aim of providing learners with basic skills to identify and address problems. Successful candidates will be able to identify suspected mental health conditions, and will have developed the skills to start conversations and signpost colleagues towards professional help.

As a basic grounding in how to acknowledge and address issues of mental health in the workplace, the course is suitable for any and all employees across a range of industries. Rather than creating a culture of vigilance, Level 1 Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health training aims to build understanding among colleagues, and create a more positive and open climate around mental health.

 

What does the course consist of?

A range of First Aid for Mental Health related subjects are covered, including:

  • What is First Aid for Mental Health?
  • Identifying mental health conditions
  • Providing advice and starting a conversation
  • Stress and anxiety

 

Duration

The course takes a minimum of 4 hours spread over at least one day, with professional guidance from highly qualified and experienced instructors.

Ideally, the course should be run in one day, but must be completed within 2 weeks of starting the course, with each training session a minimum of two hours.

 

Numbers


A maximum of 16 students are allowed on each course, with a minimum age of 14 years. Certificates can be offered to all candidates, subject to assessment.


Assessment

A range of methods are used, including practical and questioning (open and multiple-choice).

 

Certification

A Level 1 Award in Awareness for First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. There is no expiry of the qualification, but annual refresher training is recommended.
