About The UKATA Asbestos Awareness Online Course
Our UKATA Asbestos Awareness Online Course provides clear, practical asbestos awareness training for organisations, sole traders and contractors who may come across asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) while working.
This asbestos awareness course online is designed to help learners recognise when asbestos could be present, understand the risks of disturbing it, and know the correct actions to take to protect themselves and others. Whether you’re completing training for compliance, onboarding new staff, or refreshing existing knowledge, this course delivers an industry-recognised standard through a convenient e-learning format.
This UKATA asbestos awareness programme has been developed by SAMS LTD in conjunction with UKATA (the United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association). UKATA is an independent body that sets standards and audits training providers—meaning you can be confident your UKATA asbestos awareness training is credible, current and aligned with industry expectations.
The course is designed for a wide range of job roles across construction and maintenance, including tradespeople, contractors, facilities staff, surveyors, decorators, plumbers, electricians and anyone working on buildings where asbestos may still be present.
The course is delivered in a modern video-based format that makes learning more engaging and easier to follow than traditional audio-only training. It focuses on the real-world dangers associated with airborne asbestos fibres, which are often released when people unknowingly drill, cut, sand or break materials containing asbestos.
Through clear examples and a structured learning path, learners develop stronger awareness of how exposure occurs, why asbestos risk must be taken seriously, and how to avoid unsafe situations.
If you work on buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000, asbestos could still be present in many common materials. This is why completing training asbestos awareness is essential—particularly for roles that involve intrusive work, refurbishments, repairs, installations or general building maintenance.
The course takes approximately two hours to complete. On successful completion, you’ll automatically receive your UKATA Asbestos Awareness certificate, which you can download immediately—ideal if you need proof of training for work, contractors, compliance checks or tenders.
Access and technical guidance (important):
- Your login details will be sent to the email address used at checkout—please ensure it’s correct to avoid delays.

- Safari is not recommended / does not work for this e-learning course.
- UKATA advises completing the course on a 10-inch screen or larger (7 inches is the minimum). This ensures text, video and key safety visuals display correctly.
UKATA Asbestos Awareness Online Course Modules
The UKATA Asbestos Awareness Online Course is split into structured modules to ensure learners build knowledge step-by-step and finish with a clear understanding of asbestos risk and safe behaviour. Although some training formats may vary across different UKATA members, the topics below are categorised in line with UKATA expectations and common workplace risk scenarios.
Types and properties of asbestos
This module explains what asbestos is, why it was used so widely in the UK, and what makes it hazardous. You’ll learn about different asbestos types (including general distinctions used in awareness training), why asbestos fibres can become airborne, and why asbestos is particularly dangerous because exposure often occurs without immediate symptoms.
The aim is to ensure learners understand the nature of the material and why strict caution is required in older buildings.
Uses of asbestos and likely locations of ACMs in buildings and plant
Learners are guided through common historical uses of asbestos and typical places it may still be found. This includes understanding how asbestos was used for insulation, fire resistance and durability, and why it appears in many building materials and systems. You’ll learn how to spot likely risk areas and recognise situations where asbestos could be present—helping prevent accidental disturbance during routine work.
The risks of asbestos, entry routes in the body and the health effects
This module covers how asbestos fibres enter the body (primarily through inhalation), and the potential long-term health effects associated with exposure. It focuses on why prevention is essential and why safe decision-making matters even when asbestos is not visible. You’ll gain awareness of how risk increases when ACMs are damaged, disturbed or degraded, and why correct procedures must be followed when asbestos is suspected.
Asbestos legislation
Understanding your responsibilities is crucial. This section introduces the legal framework relevant to asbestos awareness, including what employers must do to protect workers and what workers must do to protect themselves and others. You’ll learn why asbestos awareness is a key part of workplace health and safety compliance and how awareness training fits into broader duty-of-care obligations.
Emergency procedures
This module explains what to do if you suspect you have disturbed asbestos or encountered damaged materials. You’ll learn immediate steps to reduce risk, including safe stop-work actions, isolating the area, reporting correctly, and following site procedures. This helps ensure learners know how to respond calmly and responsibly, reducing the chance of further exposure.
Navigation and completion rules:
Learners move through the training using the buttons provided in the platform. Each video must be watched fully before continuing. This maintains training quality and ensures every learner receives the full learning content. You can replay video sections at any time if you want to revise before moving forward or before the asbestos awareness test.
CITB NI Grants
This UKATA asbestos awareness course online has been registered by CITB NI for grant assistance to registered in-scope employers in Northern Ireland. This can support organisations that need to provide asbestos awareness training for staff who work in environments where asbestos may be present.
If you are a CITB NI registered employer, you may be able to claim support depending on your eligibility and scope status. For the most accurate and up-to-date details and guidance on grant support for registered employers, please visit the CITB NI website.
The Benefits of Asbestos Awareness e-Learning
E-learning is now a widely used and trusted way to deliver asbestos awareness training online, particularly for businesses looking for flexible training solutions that reduce travel and downtime. Online training enables learners to complete the course in a controlled, consistent format while still receiving clear instruction that supports safe behaviour on site.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recognises e-learning as a valid method for asbestos awareness training when it meets the requirements of Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the associated Approved Code of Practice L143, “Managing and working with asbestos.” Our course is designed to support those requirements by ensuring learners receive structured information, practical examples and a learning pathway that reinforces key compliance behaviours.
This video-based asbestos awareness online course is built to make learning engaging and effective. By focusing on real-world scenarios, likely asbestos locations and appropriate responses, learners gain practical awareness they can apply immediately at work. For many candidates, the visual format improves confidence when identifying risk situations compared with audio-only learning, supporting better hazard recognition and safer decision-making.
Important limitation (awareness vs working with asbestos):
This course is an asbestos awareness course only. It does not qualify learners to work with or remove asbestos materials. If your role involves working directly with ACMs, you will require additional training that is suitable for that work (often classroom-based and role-specific).
This course is designed to reduce risk by helping candidates avoid accidental exposure and follow correct reporting and escalation procedures.
HSE guidance commonly recommends regular refreshers for those whose work may bring them into contact with asbestos. For many roles, annual renewal is considered best practice—especially for trades and maintenance workers operating in older premises.
e-Learning is the more cost-effective and convenient alternative to classroom training. This video-based online asbestos awareness course is intended to make students aware of the dangers of asbestos arising from unknowingly coming into contact with airborne asbestos fibres.
e-Learning is recognised by HSE as a good learning tool as long as it meets the requirements of Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Approved Code of Practice L143 ‘Managing and working with asbestos’. Our new UKATA Asbestos Awareness course has been developed to make learning about asbestos an enjoyable and engaging process.
Please note that this online asbestos awareness course does not train students to work with any Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs), which can only be trained in a classroom environment. The course is about making the candidates aware of the dangers associated with unknowingly coming into contact with asbestos.
Please be aware that HSE recommend that asbestos training needs to be taken on an annual basis for individuals are most probably going to come into contact with asbestos through their job. This course is fully audited and registered by the United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association, which is the leading organisation of its nature.
How does the UKATA Asbestos Awareness Online Course work?
Video training
SAMS LTD has invested in high-quality video learning to deliver a classroom-level experience in an online format. Training is delivered by our Managing Director, Lee Sadd, offering a professional, consistent learning experience built around practical awareness. The course structure is designed to keep learners engaged while reinforcing the most important safety behaviours—recognising likely asbestos risks, avoiding disturbance of suspect materials, and following correct site procedures.
Because the content is delivered via video, learners benefit from clearer visuals, real examples, and a more guided learning pace than older audio-only systems. This makes the course suitable for individuals and teams who need reliable, standardised UKATA asbestos awareness training online.
Monitor Staff Progress
For employers and organisations, SAMS LTD offers an advantage through the organisational features within our learning management system (LMS). Businesses can monitor who has started training, who has completed modules, and who still needs to finish the course. Companies can also access certification records in one place, helping streamline compliance, audit readiness, onboarding and staff refresher planning—especially useful for contractors managing training across multiple projects or sites.
Your Certificate
After successfully completing the course and passing the asbestos awareness test, your UKATA asbestos awareness certificate becomes available immediately to download and print. The certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, supporting annual refresher expectations for many job roles.
Licences are purchased per candidate. If you have a team, multiple licences will be required. Licences do not expire and can be redeemed at any time, which is useful for staggered onboarding and planned training schedules. Please note: certificates are not emailed. Once completed, the certificate must be downloaded/printed directly from the course platform.
