Why does Black Friday exist?
Black Friday is popularly known as the day where shops putting everything on sale for a ridiculously cheap price. You walk down the high street and you see signs everywhere! 20% OFF, 50% OFF and even 70% OFF. You see people acting in a mob mentality fashion, as retailers lure them in towards the cheap goods. The question still holds why would this holiday exist?
Firstly, why do we call it black Friday, Black Friday was first created to signify the market that crashed in 1869. The financial crisis initially happened due to the gold market. It crashed eventually due to golds price being raised so high. Therefore, linked to when retail stores were in the ‘red’ for the entire year, which indicated awful sales. The day after Thanksgiving was known as retailers being in the ‘black’, as shoppers then rushed to buy all the discounted goods. From that day on, the day after Thanksgiving when then labelled as the Black Friday we now know and love today.
